Design Systems That Scale: From Figma Chaos to a Single Source of Truth
By PixelForge Studio · 2026-10-12 · 8 min read
Most design systems fail not because the components are wrong, but because nobody trusts them. Teams keep local copies, rename tokens, and ship one-off styles. The fix is governance before pixels: agree who owns decisions, how changes are proposed, and how breaking changes are versioned.
Start with design tokens — colour, spacing, type, radius and shadow — exported from Figma variables to CSS variables and a JSON source engineers consume. When a button changes in one place and updates everywhere, trust follows.
Audit first. Inventory every screen, cluster duplicates, and keep the 20% of components that cover 80% of product surface. Document each component with purpose, anatomy, states, do-and-don't examples, and accessibility notes.
Finally, treat your system like a product: changelog, office hours, contribution guide, and quarterly health metrics — adoption rate, detaches, and duplicate components created. A system that is measured gets maintained.
